European Graduate Programme – Underwriter

Type:
Description

Hiscox European Graduate Programme

You will join a cohort of graduates across our European locations and together with your peers in the UK, you’ll experience a structured learning programme that will equip you with skills essential for your future career. This learning starts with an induction week in London and is followed by a combination of virtual and in person training throughout the course of your graduate programme and covers topics such as financial acumen and presentation skills.

Our graduate scheme is designed to give you a broad understanding of our European business. In addition to your core role, you’ll experience two secondments in different teams – these secondments are three months in length, and one will be in our Lisbon office. You’ll also spend time in our Luxembourg office learning about the regulatory environment that we operate in and will have an opportunity to be involved in a European-wide project, such as developing a new product offering.

The programme is designed for maximum career impact. Throughout your time on the graduate scheme, you’ll be supported by a senior level sponsor who sits on the European Management Team, as well as regular access to the CEO of Hiscox Europe. Your time on the scheme will equip you to become a competent underwriter with a wide skill set and an understanding of our European business – equipping you well for future roles not just in your own team, but in our European business more broadly.

Your role as a Graduate Underwriter

Underwriting is about risk analysis and selection, trading, creativity and innovation. At Hiscox, underwriters use judgement, skill and experience to assess, accept or decline risks in line with our underwriting philosophy. They offer flexible and attractive underwriting solutions to customers, partners and brokers, and undertake account and performance analysis for lines of business and brokers or partners to ensure profitability.

Underwriting is a great place to start your career in the insurance industry. You will develop a full understanding of underwriting basics and principles, gaining underwriting authority in at least one of our key business lines. You’ll use your analytical and critical thinking skills, learning how to assess risks and make underwriting decisions.

You’ll be a strong communicator with good interpersonal skills, and will build on these skills as you learn how to trade with our brokers and partners in both good and poor market conditions. Trading is a key part of the role and you’ll be interested in working in sales and dealing with clients.

This is a great opportunity to start your career in a role where you will make tangible contributions to your team from day one. You’ll interact with a range of experienced colleagues and senior managers in an environment where having the courage to say what you think is not only actively encouraged, but is central to how we run our business.

Is it for me?

Are you curious, eager to learn and try new things? Can you think on your feet and make quick, intelligent and commercial decisions? Can you combine strong analytical skills with an ability to build solid relationships? Do you have the courage to ask difficult questions and challenge the status quo? If you’re answering yes to these questions, our graduate programme is for you.
